He was the son of a Jewish businessman, who came from the Crimea. After the death of his father Leopold became the head of a family who was deported to the concentration camp in Auschwitz in 1944, where both his brother and mother died. He was one of the few survivors and initiated the construction of a memorial to 99 victims of the Holocaust at the Jewish Cemetery.
