This Diószeg native of Jewish origin grew up in Nüremberg, where he studied pedagogy. He spent World War II in Warsaw and Vilnius and survived the hardship of a concentration camp. After the war Herman lived in Switzerland and devoted his life to literary works and translation from Hebrew. His autobiographical work Sergeant Schmid received several awards.
